Ana-Lucia knew about Alcatraz island the entire time, it seems as though Michael killing her was his attempt at 'winging it' when releasing Ben. But the others actually ordered it so Sawyer wouldn't find out about Alcatraz island. If he had known obviously this would have ruined the con Ben did on him!
